Know Your History. Know Your Roots.

April 22, 2020

It’s a few minutes to midnight as I write this while listening to Us by Ruby Ibarra ft. Rocky Rivera, Klassy, & Faith Santilla. All day I have been working to set up this blog, the latest out of many.

Turn back the clock to March 22, 2012. I don’t remember much about this day other than this was the day that I created The Pinoy-Culture Blog on Tumblr. Oh, the good old days of Tumblr.

Fast forward to April 22, 2020. It’s now been 8 years and a month to be exact, since I created that blog. It was a time of my life that I miss and cherish to my heart to this very day. Through that blog I made new friends and learned more about our history and culture as the blog continued. Over the years however, things in my personal life came up and eventually there came a point where I didn’t have the same passion I once had to keeping up with the blog.

Several factors came into play, some that made me want to just stop getting involved in the Filipino community all together. For awhile I distanced myself from the blog and the community. I focused on myself and my studies while ignoring that bit of me that I left behind.

That bit of me, like an annoying little sibling, dragged me right back in. Thus, here we are again. I feel like it’s just the ancestors nagging me to continue on what I’ve been doing. I relent.

So what happened to The Pinoy-Culture blog? Quite frankly it died. I let it die. While I do miss the blog, I also didn’t want to bring it back. There was just so much disorganization and juggling to find content and information between the Tumblr blog and the self hosted website of the long gone Pinoy-Culture.com, that it was just a pain in the ass.

An old banner from Pinoy-Culture.com that is now long gone.

So what now? Well, my dear reader, this is where this blog comes in. Ta-da!

The Pinay Writer is following in the footsteps of it’s predecessor starting with a brand new fresh new start. No politics. No trying to please others. Just straight up writing and journaling and sharing my own personal thoughts, musings, and studies of our history, folklore, and culture.

Think of it as a part journal. Part history lesson. With some occasional snark and mindless ramblings at 2am in the morning. (Where things might get a bit weird at times, but that is totally ok.)

So, you may be asking, what should you expect to see and read on The Pinay Writer? My passion for our peoples history, culture, and folklore remains the same and is the main focus of this blog. I do plan to rewrite most of what I have written over the years, but also discuss new topics that I never covered before. As I continue my studies and readings, I will be journaling them here.

I also want to set up some study sessions along the way. Maybe every other week or once a month depending on my schedule. These study sessions will be with a group of people either through a platform like Zoom or something else, where we can sit and discuss topics and what we have learned and our thoughts on it. After the world going digital with classes, conferences, and meetings due to this recent pandemic of Covid-19, it has opened up new ways to communicate with others from across the world. While we have always had the ability to with the invention of the internet, it’s only now that we are really exploring other ways to get together online.

I hope The Pinay Writer will inspire you to read and research our history and culture for yourself. There is just so much to know about the stories and traditions of our ancestors. After all, it’s important to know your roots and to know your history. As Jose Rizal once said:

  • This blog is dedicated to the ancestors, the spirits of the land, the rich and diverse history and cultures of the Philippines, and to her people.

May we continue to seek out the knowledge and to learn more about who we are, our histories, identities, and stories. And upon learning these histories, folklore, and culture for ourselves, may we continue to teach and pass them on to the next and future generations.

    Salamat for reading!
